PINCH ME~ I HAVE MY OWN LIVE EDGE TABLE!! | SUSTAINABLE INTERIOR DESIGN | NOVEMBER 25

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

That is me screaming! Recently we, picked up our custom-made, beyond gorgeous 86" x 48" x 2" solid black walnut live edge table.

Getting it into our house was quite a challenge due to its size.  Hubby and 2 men wrestled with this incredibly heavy, probably 200 lb table to get it in our front door. I was navigating and it still almost didn't happen.

It is absolutely HUGE and we love it and still can't believe we have one!!

If you have been following the De-sign of the Times blog for awhile, you will know that I am crazy in loooooove with live edge tables and have been wanting one for quite some time. I just never, ever imagined that we would purchase one due to the exorbitant price $$$$$$$ tags. For the size we wanted, I have been quoted prices ranging anywhere from $7000.00 - 18,000.00 yikes!!!!

So, while researching suppliers, my husband came across a company in Cambridge, Ontario called Galt Wood Co.  I gave them a call and spoke with the owner and Head Builder, George Hollinger. This guy is incredible! I told him what we were looking for, what size we wanted, that we preferred Walnut and then asked him for a quote while holding my breath. His price was amazing and we ordered our live edge table right there and then.

I asked George, how much was required for a deposit and the method of payment.  He responded, "I don't require a deposit."  Huh?  Just the good old-fashioned business model called TRUST.  Love it!!!
Here is a quote from their website,

"From massive live edge slabs to 100+ year old barn beams, The Galt Wood Co uses the most unique materials to create gorgeous one of a kind furniture pieces.

We work with you to bring your dream furniture into a reality. We walk you through the process of selecting a wood species, choosing styles, and figuring out dimensions. All our furniture is hand made to your specifications."

And a few samples from their exquisite portfolio of work

We were given a date of 4 weeks for our table to be ready for pick up.  In the meantime, we drove out to Cambridge to deliver the legs that had been on our Duncan Phyfe table.  They would be refinished, stained and attached to our new table.  My personal design style is contemporary but I sometimes like to throw a little old in there for some visual interest.  George, didn't think the style would work as he typically likes to use steel bases on the live edge tables but he thought the Duncan Phyfe legs looked great.

Here is a pic of the legs being installed. A long piece of heavy metal was placed between the legs to support the table.

In an attempt to reduce our own carbon footprint and to also live a simpler life, we moved into a small home several years ago.  Living in a smaller home means that many of our rooms I have had to design to serve multi-purposes. One being our kitchen/dining room. When I was planning this room, I didn't want it to look too kitcheny,(I know that is not a word, but you know what I mean!!) We don't have a dining room, (many dining rooms are under utilized anyways in my opinion) so I wanted a huge good for everything table that could seat 10-12 at dinner comfortably, could be used as a board table to meet with clients and suppliers, a table where I could lay out fabrics, floor plans, blueprints, mood boards, play cards, use for sewing and making crafts etc.  Well this table fits the bill perfectly and because it is constructed out of walnut which is a very, very hard wood, it is virtually indestructible. Sustainable furniture has fine workmanship and is built to last. We will NEVER have to purchase another table and this will certainly become an heirloom.

To compliment our new table, we built a very long banquette from scratch and framed a large unframed piece of mirror to hang behind the banquette.  This was all part of a Nightmare Design Dilemma which has been driving me nuts for awhile. (Stay tuned for that post). I will also post some DIY projects on how we built our banquette and mirror.

Saturday night we hosted our first dinner party at our new table and banquette.  Everyone was very comfortable and had tons of elbow space. It felt like we were at a restaurant.

Here are a few pics of our table.

We particularly love this side of the table where the very large knot is emphasized and curves out at that point. It adds such visual interest and is quite a conversation starter. This picture also shows how the live edge was finished on an angle and smoothed out.

This shot gives you view of the Duncan Phyfe legs that were added as well as a pic, although not a great pic, of the banquette we built.

If you looking for a Live Edge Table, we would highly recommend Galt Wood Co. I can guarantee, you will not be disappointed.

If you would like to take advantage of a designer discount on your table, please contact Soulier Design Studio in advance and we will refer you as our client.

Love to her what you think of our table!!

FIRST DAY OF SPRING - WE WELCOME YOU WITH OPEN ARMS! | IT'S A NEW DAY | MARCH 20

OH yeeeeeeeeessssss, Spring officially arrived today at 12:57pm EST.

That is the good news, however, the bad news is that there is still piles and piles of snow in my back and front yards and it is still freeeeeeezing! Here in the Toronto, Ontario, Canada area, we have set some new records weather-wise with 89 days of snow this winter so far; apparently, it's not over. Old man winter just won't pack his bags. It has been a really long one and it has been exceptionally dreary.

Despite the white stuff all over the yards, one thing we know for certain is that beautiful sunny, warm days are peeking around the corner and very, very soon, after wearing them day after day for what seems an eternity, we will be shedding our heavy winter coats, boots, scarves, gloves and hats. When that day comes, I will be dancing in the streets!!

Since spring is a time of renewal, growth and new life, you will notice a huge positive upward, refreshing shift in the energy in your home by practicing this same shedding. I don't know about you, but I am itching to spruce up my home after the very long winter season with some spring/summer touches and bright vibrant colours.  I simply can't wait to store away the heavy winter throws, change up the decorative cushions from the dark earthy tones to ones with more cheery hues, add some fragrant fresh flowers to the tables and bust open all the windows for some fresh air.

Here's hoping that some springtime inspiration for your home will get you into the decorating mood!

Starting with some fabulous cheery furnishings......

THANKSGIVING - A TIME TO REFLECT | KICKING BACK ON THE WEEKEND | OCT 12

Thanksgiving weekend has finally arrived in Canada.

Are you aware that Thanksgiving day in Canada has been celebrated on the second Monday of October since 1957?
This holiday gives people an opportunity to give thanks for a good harvest and other good fortunes in the past year. A time when people visit family and friends to share a special meal or invite them into their own homes.

Some take this time of year to enjoy a short fall vacation or to spend one last weekend up at their summer cottage before the winter season arrives.

Whatever you choose to do this weekend, I encourage you to set aside some "KICKING BACK" time. Purposely disengage from the dizzying pace of our very hectic daily life we live each and every day and spend some time reflecting about what it is that you are truly thankful for.

I find as I grow older, my reflections are quite different now than in years past and I am so much more appreciative of the smaller, simpler things in life.

On a personal note, I would like to share just a few of my good fortunes that I am passionately thankful for ...

I was diagnosed with Cancer in April of this year.  I had successful surgery in May and was fortunate to have an amazing team of Doctors.  I am alive and I am now healthy again.

This I am thankful for ...

I am fortunate to have a lovely home and life which I share with the most wonderful husband in the world and our two kitties.

This I am thankful for ...

I am fortunate to have wonderful friends and family which includes my two beautiful adult children and their spouses, two gorgeous grandchildren, brothers and their children, a sister, a beautiful niece, her husband and their 3 gorgeous sons and a million in-laws (my husband is the 16th child of 17)

This I am thankful for ...

A long time dear friend has recently suffered a debilitating stroke but is making steady progress.

This I am thankful for ...

I am fortunate that on this Thanksgiving weekend, I am happy to have been blessed with love, family, hope, compassion for others, generosity and the precious memories of loved ones no longer with us.

This I am also thankful for ....
I would love for you to share with all of us, what is on your thankful for ... list!

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE FRONT VERANDAH ?? | KICKING BACK ON THE WEEKEND | OCT 5

With Thanksgiving and the Holiday Season peeking their heads around the corner, I have been reminiscing about my childhood and the gathering of family and friends.  There has always been twenty-four hours in a day, but somehow years ago, it seems we had more time for getting together for social occasions.

I remember when families would sit down at the dining table and engage in conversation sharing the highlights of their day. Then go out for a lovely evening walk, or sit on the front verandah and chat with the neighbour's. Speaking of verandahs; the front of many homes were built with them years ago which also supported the interaction of neighbour's.

Another fond memory, was friends dressing up and gathering regularly for a dinner party, a pot luck or a game of bridge rotating the get together times at each others homes.

As a society, we just don't do that very much anymore.

When my children were growing up, sitting at the dining table was something we did each evening with no distractions of television or video games just good old fashioned conversation.  After dinner I would play the piano and we would sing up a storm!  This is what memories are made of.

Modern times seems to have really shifted our priorities and many of these special times have been lost. It seems our social time now is jammed into the 140 characters posted on Twitter and if we want to see our friends we view them on Facebook.  We simply do not take the time to " KICK BACK ON THE WEEKEND" and commit to get-together's with family and friends.

Everyone seems too busy doing their own thing.

Not only does spending time with others feel so good, it actually has been found to improve our health while combating the negative effects of stress.  With our hectic lives these days we sure need to do whatever we can to REDUCE our stress levels!

So, it's still early in the day.  Why not plan an impromptu party and make some fun plans for this evening to spend some quality time with your friends, family or both!!

Here is some Inspiration for you ...................Enjoy!

LET'S GO CAMPING | KICKING BACK ON THE WEEKEND | SEPT 28

Any special plans for the weekend? Camping anyone?

I am sure you are thinking that this post is several weeks late but camping in the fall, provided that you have all the proper supplies to keep you toasty warm, is really quite refreshing!

The fact that I am even writing about Camping is a miracle in itself as the first time I ever camped in my entire life was just 7 years ago. I just didn't think that it was something that I could ever possibly enjoy.  Not to sound like a snob but my vision of camping out at that time was a black and white TV at a Holiday Inn!!

Anyway, my husband Joe, a lifelong, very seasoned camper assured me that it would be fun sleeping in a tent up at our property in Haliburton yeah sure it would; roughing it, cooking outside, enjoying the great outdoors, not worrying about putting on makeup, or blow-drying + styling my hair. All those things that come with city living.  Instead relaxing, void of all electronic distractions, listening to the beautiful sounds of nature, watching the sunrise and sunset all while sitting in front of a roaring campfire (something you can't do in the city), engaging in wonderful conversation and enjoying our favourite red. To my surprise he was actually right.  I loved, loved, loved it and could not believe that I had missed out on this extremely nurturing, back to the basics kind of experience all these years!

We spent many glorious weekends camping, however, bears became a problem which changed the way that we camped but that was an amazing adventure of its own.  For safety, instead of a tent we converted a school bus into an RV.  A total blast and tons of fun!

Sometimes trying something foreign makes us uneasy. We are are all creatures of habit and don't like to stray too far out of our comfort zone.  If you have not tried camping, consider giving it a try.  I highly recommend it and I am sure you will also embrace it as much as I have.

Some Camping Inspiration for you........Enjoy!
