MOVEMBER CANADA AND THE POWER OF THE MOUSTACHE!! | IT'S A NEW DAY | Nov 4

It is simply amazing the power that a moustache can have!

We are one week into Movember. For those of you that are not familiar with Movember;  it is a global movement which encourages men to grow a moustache for the 30 days of November to raise awareness of men's health issues particularly prostate and testicular cancers as well as mental health challenges.

The Movember Foundation is focused on living with and beyond cancer, staying mentally healthy and living with and beyond mental illness.  Mo (short for moustache) Bros begin the month without any facial hair and then grow and groom their Mo for the remainder of November while requesting donations from family and friends to donate to this very worthy cause.

Mo Sistas are the women that support the Mo and encourage the Mo Bros in their lives. They participate in fund raising activities and do basically everything that the Mo Bros do without growing a MO. Some women have decided to grow their underarm hair in support of the Mo for the month of November. I applaud their dedication to the movement.

Here are the official Rules from Movember.org

  1. On Shadowe'en (October 31st), the complete moustache region, including the entire upper lip and the handlebar zones, must be completely shaved.
  2. For the entire duration of Movember (Movember 1st - 35th inclusive), no hair shall be allowed to grow in the goatee zone - being any facial area below the bottom lip.
  3. There is to be no joining of the moustache to sideburns.
  4. Failure to conform to all of these rules may, at the discretion of the official Movember Committee, result in instant blacklisting and may void invitation to the end of Month festivities (this year lip-marked for Movember 35th!)
  5. Movember Committee accepts no responsibility for lost jobs, rashes, food/beer encrustments or any other such mishaps caused to the wearer (or his partner) of a Movember Moustache. You grew it yourself.

FIRST DAY OF SPRING - WE WELCOME YOU WITH OPEN ARMS! | IT'S A NEW DAY | MARCH 20

OH yeeeeeeeeessssss, Spring officially arrived today at 12:57pm EST.

That is the good news, however, the bad news is that there is still piles and piles of snow in my back and front yards and it is still freeeeeeezing! Here in the Toronto, Ontario, Canada area, we have set some new records weather-wise with 89 days of snow this winter so far; apparently, it's not over. Old man winter just won't pack his bags. It has been a really long one and it has been exceptionally dreary.

Despite the white stuff all over the yards, one thing we know for certain is that beautiful sunny, warm days are peeking around the corner and very, very soon, after wearing them day after day for what seems an eternity, we will be shedding our heavy winter coats, boots, scarves, gloves and hats. When that day comes, I will be dancing in the streets!!

Since spring is a time of renewal, growth and new life, you will notice a huge positive upward, refreshing shift in the energy in your home by practicing this same shedding. I don't know about you, but I am itching to spruce up my home after the very long winter season with some spring/summer touches and bright vibrant colours.  I simply can't wait to store away the heavy winter throws, change up the decorative cushions from the dark earthy tones to ones with more cheery hues, add some fragrant fresh flowers to the tables and bust open all the windows for some fresh air.

Here's hoping that some springtime inspiration for your home will get you into the decorating mood!

Starting with some fabulous cheery furnishings......

PLEASE LOOK UP FROM THAT PHONE!!!! | IT'S A NEW DAY | NOV 15

I would be completely lying if I said I didn't like Technology. I do and I am sure you do as well. Technology has added luxury and has absolutely brought benefit to our lives.

Being an information, constantly wanting to learn kind of gal, I love the fact that access to any information I desire is right at my fingertips.  Conversely, I do feel that there is also a downside or side effects of Technology one of them being that it is curbing our capability to pay attention and that we are losing our human connection. So many people have been killed or seriously injured because they were walking across the street mindlessly like a zombie texting and were hit by a car.

This pic was part of an article I saw this morning.

Does this picture look familiar to you? Can you relate?
The article went on to say that the worst part is - that they are probably texting the people walking in front of them.  How sad is that? I have heard so many times people saying that they text their family members that are in the next room of their house. It is like our lips are painted on or we have forgotten how to communicate with people unless it is in the form of an email/text.
Quick story; recently I had a scheduled meeting with a colleague.  Within a minute of our meeting starting and in the middle of me speaking, his phone beeped indicating the receipt of a text. He pulled his phone out of his breast pocket to read his text, chuckled and then responded back.  At this point, I was in utter shock and really could not believe how anyone could be so rude.  He finished his text and I resumed speaking when his phone beeped again. Once again he started reading his text and responding back like I was a mirage.  At this point, I got up and walked out of his office.  He looked up from his phone and yelled out to me, "Wait, where are you going".  I replied, "are you kidding me? My time is valuable and I didn't schedule this meeting to watch you text.  Goodbye."
This stuff just boggles my mind.  This ignorant jerk guy was basically standing in his office scratching his head wondering why I was leaving. Unbelievably, it didn't even occur to him that his behavior was RUDE.
I have often observed two people out for dinner and ignoring each other because they were completely obsessed with their phones. What is the point of going out for dinner with someone just to eat, not interact or engage in conversation and just play with your phone? You may as well be sitting with a complete stranger!
Has our culture forgotten about deportment, manners, etiquette, social graces? Does anyone even have a vague idea of what they are anymore?

Technology is fabulous but we should use it wisely and not when spending quality time with family and friends.

Please look up from that phone ....
Have a great day!

TROPICAL INSPIRATION | IT'S A NEW DAY | NOV 14

Good Morning!

I try to live my life thinking positively as I am sure you do as well, but sometimes life's challenges get in the way.  Maybe you are bogged down at work and don't think that you will ever conquer that ever growing pile of work on your desk, maybe someone close to you is experiencing some difficult health issues or maybe you just feel stressed from the daily grind and are exasperated.

All of us can use a little motivation and inspiration once in a while to help us navigate life's hurdles we encounter along the way.

Personally, I am due for a lovely holiday and because I love warmth and the sunshine something tropical sounds pretty good right now!

Some Inspiration for you...... Enjoy!

ECO-FRIENDLY WARM, WONDERFUL, WOOL

I love, love, love Wool. Probably has to do with the fact that I am always freezing.  Basically, it's the time of year when all I want is to curl up by the fire with a warm wool blanket and wait out the winter.

Pure, natural wool has been used for centuries for it's warmth and comfort in both hot and cold climates. For snugly warmth and long-lasting durability, you simply can’t beat pure wool.

Contemporary or traditional wool is timeless.

Did you know that wool has natural air filtering properties and is naturally non-allergenic?? Wool does not provide nutrients for bacteria or dust mites or promote mold growth.

Due to it's many unique attributes, wool gives superior performance to man made fibres, making it the perfect Eco-friendly choice.
Wool is a renewable fiber and grows continuously on a sheep's back all year round. During summer, the wool from New Zealand sheep is removed and the sheep return to their pasture.

Under the right conditions, wool is totally biodegradable. If returned to the ground or landfill, a wool blanket will decompose leaving no harmful residues.
Here are some beautifully made luxurious throws and blankets.  As you can see, they come in a wide array of styles and patterns.

WHAT ARE YOU CELEBRATING TODAY?? | IT'S A NEW DAY | NOV 6

I have always tried to keep up with the world events.

Each day, I would sit at my computer with my morning coffee and read the news, however, I now realize that I feel better when I don't.

The majority of what you read or all that is published these days is the BAD stuff and it really can shift your mind set.  Positive thinking is pretty difficult when you keep hearing about all the heartache, wars, hunger, stabbings and murders going on in our world.

NEGATIVITY always seems to be the headliner.

It seems that as a society we are taught to dwell on the negative in life and ourselves which can be super destructive and extremely draining. It is like a drug that constantly needs to be fed and sucks out all of your energy.

By allowing NEGATIVITY to resonate in our lives we begin to undervalue ourselves and our accomplishments.

Listen, we live in a crazy world. We all have stuff that happens in our lives. I am not suggesting that you walk around in a la la fantasy land with rose coloured glasses pretending that everything is wonderful and lovely. But if you just step back for a moment and analyze your life, you will pleasantly discover that there are many reasons to celebrate!

Celebrate...

that you are gainfully employed; many are not

your birthday; the birthday of a friend

 a special anniversary

your wedding

the birth of a child; a grandchild

the love of friends and family

a new job; a job promotion

your health and well being

a new home

the list is really endless...

Remember that by changing your mindset and focus to a more positive one will result in a complete shift in your life and the way in which you view things.

So ... What are you celebrating today?

GHOSTS, GOBLINS AND SPIDER WEBS-HAPPY HALLOWEEN !! | IT'S A NEW DAY | Oct 31

Ghosts, Goblins, Graveyards, Spider Webs....

As I drove through my neighbourhood yesterday, I admired all the homes decorated for Halloween in anticipation of all the little trick-or-treaters.

Wow!! I have some pretty talented and creative neighbours!

It's the time of the year when my husband and I light our pumpkins, switch off the lights and watch all the scary movies on television. Bride of Frankenstein, Halloween, Frankenstein, The Wolf man; all the old Universal Films.

Our pumpkins have been carved and will light up the front of the house, our treats are in bowls near the front door and we happily await visits from the neighbourhood children.  It is so much fun watching all the cute little ones in their costumes as they go from house to house collecting their candy loot.

Unfortunatley, this translates into TONS OF SUGAR.

As I mentioned in my last post, I would share some healthy alternatives for a few Halloween treats that also make perfect additions to a Halloween Party.

Enjoy!!

Mini Peanut Butter Cups

 Ingredients:

1/2 cup cacao powder
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup pure maple syrup
1/4 cup all natural, organic peanut butter* (or almond butter or cashew butter)
12 mini cupcake wrappers

Note: I like to use the peanut butter you can press fresh from a container so it’s in its most natural state. If you can’t find that, then look for an organic, all-natural brand. Certain brands you find on the shelf have added toxins and chemicals that are not good for our bodies.

Directions:

1.) Mix cacao powder, coconut oil, and maple syrup in a small bowl until a smooth consistency is formed.
2.) Place a small spoonful of the chocolate into the bottom of the cupcake wrappers.
3.) Add a small scoop of peanut butter to the chocolate and spread evenly.
4.) Top the peanut butter with a small scoop of the chocolate and spread evenly to coat the surface.
5.) Place the mini Peanut Butter Cups in the freezer.
6.) Serve once they are hardened and chilled (about 1 hour).
7.) If you are storing them to eat later, store in the freezer.

Here is another fun treat that your kids will enjoy making and eating!

Healthy Pumpkin Patch

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups/360 g. cashews
1/2 cup/110 g. goji berries ( I use dried cranberries)
1/4 cup/75 g. rolled oats
2 Tbsp./30 ml. pure maple syrup
2 Tbsp./30 ml. coconut oil
Pinch of Himalayan salt
1 large carrot
1 celery stalk
2 parsley stems with leaves

Directions:1.) Combine cashews, goji berries and rolled oats in food processor and process on high until a fine crumble forms.

2.) Add cashew, goji, oat mixture into large bowl and then add maple syrup, coconut oil and salt.

3.) Mix all ingredients together well until a dough forms.

4.) For half of the mixture, roll small spoonfuls into little balls then shape them into pumpkins (that resemble candy pumpkins) by adding in little crevices with a sharp knife.

5.) Then cut celery into skinny stems, about 1/4 cm. wide and 1 in. tall. Place the celery into the top of the pumpkin with a small leaf off of the parsley stem. TIP: This was easiest when I kept a little stem on the leaf. Then I placed the stem on the middle of the pumpkin and used the celery to stick it in.

6.) For the other half of the mixture, make these into the “carved” pumpkins. First, roll a small spoonful of dough into a ball, similar to the above, then flatten the sides and bottoms of the balls and shape into pumpkins, as you see in the picture.

7.) For their face, slice a thin disc-shape from a large carrot, then use a sharp knife to carve a mini pumpkin face. These do not have to be perfect. As you can see from my picture below, they definitely look homemade but that gives them character!

8.) Stick the carrot face onto one of the flat sides of the pumpkin then add a skinny celery stalk to the top.

9.) Place all pumpkins in the fridge for 30 – 60 minutes before serving.

Who said that sweets can't be healthy??

Wishing you a Safe and Spooky Halloween.

S'MOREOS - S'MORES WITH A TWIST | IT'S A NEW DAY | Oct 28

It's Halloween Week!

Are you looking for some interesting treats to make?

This post is for all you S'MORE lovers out there.
These are called S'MOREOS.  S'Mores with a twist! They are made with Oreos instead of graham crackers.
I don't even want to know how many millions of calories are in one bar!
Can you believe that I actually have never, ever had a s'more and am probably the only one left on the face of the earth that hasn't indulged in this ooey, gooey, dessert.

Truthfully, this treat is not my kind of thing. I am more of a cheesecake kind of gal. Based on the ingredients, it would be far too sweet for me plus I do not eat peanut butter. I prefer my homemade almond butter which you could actually switch out for the peanut butter for sure.

My husband has an insane sweet tooth and has been asking me to make these for him for a while now.  It's the kind of thing you make when you are expecting a bunch of guests over so that these treats are all devoured leaving no leftovers hanging around the kitchen.

As long as this is only a once in a blue moon dessert it is fine.
Enjoy!

I wasn't kidding was I ? At least a 1,000,000 calories.  Look out hips!!

Stay tuned... this week I will be posting the healthier, more nutritious alternatives to these decadent favourites.

STRESS REDUCTION | IT'S A NEW DAY | OCT 24

I 've been away a couple of days as I have been feeling a little under the weather.  I personally have had an extremely difficult year health-wise and to be perfectly honest, I have been feeling extremely STRESSED lately as a result.

Sometimes you just have to listen to your body and give it a break.  Many of us just keep pushing ourselves and do not rest when our body is telling us,

"HEY SLOW DOWN, I AM REALLY, REALLY TIRED"

We go into overdrive and our bodies protest. There are many signs that we sometimes ignore; being extremely fatigued, headache, stomach upset, insomnia, colds, flu etc.  If we do nothing to manage our stress levels, our health can be seriously compromised.

So, plan some intentional mini vacations away from the day to day craziness. Some mental time-out. Maybe it's a bubble bath with candles, a spa day, a fabulous luncheon with a friend, yoga, deep breathing, meditation, a run, or a hobby or novel that helps you to relax and diverts your mind.

Whatever works for you!
Managing stress has many short-term benefits and gives people a sense of control in their lives, helping them cope, feel more relaxed and healthier. The long-term benefits can be a stronger immune system and a reduced susceptibility to more serious diseases.

For your health consider practicing/adding some stress reduction techniques to your daily routine.

Your body will thank you!!

SUPERB SQUASH SOUP | IT'S A NEW DAY | OCT 18

Happy Friday! I am so glad that the weekend is nearly upon us.
We've be doing some internal cleansing this week with lemon juice, some pure fruit and vegetable juices and salad. Sometimes when detoxing you tend to feel a little tired the first few days when your system is purging toxins.  I am sure you have heard the old expression, "It gets worse before it gets better".
If you continue on your cleansing journey, once you get past the first few days, you will wake up with endless amounts of energy and feel like you could jump over the moon! (I am not quite there yet)
Today's cleansing recipe is a soup to warm you up on this crisp fall day.

Enjoy!

photo and recipe - courtesy of Jason Vale

SQUASH SOUP

  • 500ml (16fl oz) vegetable stock
  • 750g (1lb 10 oz) squash, cut into cubes
  • 2 red onions, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, halved
  • 60ml (2fl oz) live yogurt
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

  • Instructions

    • Put the stock and 500ml (15 fl oz) of water into a heavy based pan and bring to the boil. Add the squash, onions and garlic and return to the boil. Reduce the heat slightly and cook for 15 minutes or until the squash is smooth.
    • Drain the vegetables in a colander, reserving the liquid. Puree the squash mixture until smooth, either in a hand blender or with a hand masher (you may need to add some of the reserved liquid to make mashing a little easier).
    • Return the squash puree to the pan and stir in enough reserved liquid to reach the preferred consistency.
    • Season to taste with nutmeg and cracked black pepper.
    • Ladle the soup into bowls and pour some of the live yogurt into each bowl to create a swirl pattern on the top.
    • Sprinkle with nutmeg, serve with fresh rye bread and enjoy.

Why this is good for you

This soup is packed full of potassium, vitamins A and C, folic acid, loads of antioxidants and even some good bacteria. It's easy to make and, like all of these soups, easy on the digestive system

    TURBO SALAD | IT'S A NEW DAY | OCT 17

    Happy Thursday Morning!

Continuing on our internal cleansing journey this week, post our Thanksgiving meal, I thought I would also provide a couple of cleansing salads instead of just juices.

Not everyone is into juicing.  The moral of this cleansing story is to keep food choices as simple as possible; giving the digestive track a break for a few days.

Try to avoid processed foods and take out meals, which in itself will mean a huge reduction of sodium, msg, artificial colouring, flavoring and sugar. A reduction of or elimination of caffeine (HUGE HEADACHE if not done gradually) will also be very beneficial.

This TURBO SALAD, one of my personal favourites, is loaded with wonderfully nutrient dense and cleansing ingredients.

    Enjoy!!

photo and recipe - courtesy of Jason Vale
    Ingredients
    • 1 cup rocket leaves (I use organic spring mix/greens)
    •  ½ cup watercress
    • 1/8 cup red cabbage, grated
    • ½ carrot, grated
    • ¼ cup broccoli grated
    • ½ sweet pepper (any colour), diced
    • 4 black or green olives
    • Egg cupful of cold-pressed olive oil
    • Balsamic vinegar
    • 1 lemon
    • 1 lime
    • Flesh of 1 large avocado, diced into large chunks

    Instructions

    • Place the spinach, rocket and watercress leaves on a plate or in a small salad bowl.
    • Top with the red cabbage, carrot, cucumber, broccoli, pepper and olives.
    • Add olive oil and balsamic vinegar and juice from half the lemon and lime.
    • Toss together.
    • Place the avocado chunks on top and squeeze over the lemon juice from the remaining lemon and lime.

Why this is good for you

This salad is rich in silica, helping the hair, nails, and skin.
The cabbage is superb for many digestive and intestinal problems, such as bowel infections, parasites and colitis, and the broccoli is one of nature’s true super-foods, helpful for high blood pressure, liver problems and constipation.
The grated carrot helps to reduce inflammation of the mucus membranes in the intestines and respiratory tract.

This really is one heck of a power salad!

    SWEET BEET SMOOTHIE | IT'S A NEW DAY | OCT 16

If you didn't see yesterday's post, we have been talking about spending the next couple of days eating simpler foods to give our systems a break after the Thanksgiving Weekend.

Even if you did not partake in a large dinner this weekend, it is still a great idea to give your digestive system a vacation from time to time.

I've shared with you in another post the benefits of juicing.

Here is another juice recipe that you can try!

    Sweet Beet Smoothie

photo and recipe  - courtesy of Jason Vale
Deep, dark yet surprisingly sweet beetroot juice blended with creamy soft apple juice, delicate amber carrot juice and then infused with decadent, luscious blackberries. This combination is simply divine and you won’t believe that a juice with beetroot can taste so sublime.

    Sweet Juicy ingredients
Apple x 1 (preferably Golden Delicious, but any will do)
    Carrots x 2 medium
Raw beetroot x 1 medium bulb
Blackberries x 1 large handful (or you can use other dark berries fresh or frozen)
Ice Cubes x 1 small handful

How to sweeten up your beets

Juice the apple, carrots and beetroot and pour the juice into a blender along with the berries and ice. Blend for a few seconds and pour into a beautiful glass.

    Why Sweet Beet?
Blackberries are notable for their high levels of dietary fiber, due to the way they are composed as an "aggregate fruit" composed of many individual drupelets. These individual drupelets contribute extra skin, seeds and pectin, making them among the highest fiber content plants known.
    Enjoy!!!
